Baby Shower, Chinese Style
Lili, Mabel’s assistant in the realm of wire-wrapping elegance, and her new husband, June, are expecting a little boy! To celebrate, Mabel invited the team over to her beautiful Clement Street apartment for traditional Chinese-style hot pot. Crab, rice noodles, fish cakes, spinach, and succulent thin slices of beef and pork were all immersed in our choice of spicy or non-spicy broth until cooked to perfection. Lili’s nephew, Jason, was kind enough to prepare a traditional plum sauce and Kit, her sister, did an excellent job helping to prepare the food and make everyone feel at home. Meg contributed a delicious apple tart, which Mabel’s husband, Mark, is now obsessed with. We spent the night chatting, playing with Mabel’s girls, and thinking up boy names. “Aiden” is the leading favorite. Mabel was an excellent hostess throughout and we all agreed it was the most relaxed and enjoyable baby shower any of us had ever been to.
Congratulations Lili and June! We look forward to meeting your little boy. :)

Nicole has been manning the Union St shop for the past few months and we thought it was time we introduced her to you! She trained at Academy of Art University as a metal-smith and has made a great addition to our little team. We asked her to share a few of her favorite Mabel Chong pieces of the moment:
“Mabel just dropped off some new inventory for Union Street and I am absolutely in love with these three pieces! Our cluster style earrings are available in other stones, each with their own energy, but this sapphire pair looks and feels the most elegant. They wiggle playfully when you wear them and, although they have a strong visual presence, are actually quite light! The green agate within the wire-wrapped ring reminds me of a deep pool, encased by its goldfill bezel, stacked high and protected by tidy goldfill wire-wrapping. Like the earrings, the ring is very comfortable. Finally, I am entranced by the complexity of this sapphire and sterling bracelet in that every link is individually and painstakingly hand-made. It really showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of Mabel’s designs. When worn, the strands of sapphires drape delicately around the wrist creating a stunning & sensual accent.”

Hola. Earlier this week I returned from my beautiful vacation to the Caribbean - what a memorable trip that was! We love Puerto Rico’s beautiful sunset, amazing beaches and 90 plus degrees of hot weather. Seeing my daughters sweating in their sun dresses was the best thing. Got to say I am a tropical girl. On the other hand it was amazing to come back to beautiful San Francisco. I have to say any where I go it reminds me how lucky I am to live here. Especially since we are listed as one of the 100 best shops in San Francisco. Woohoo. The gemstone ruby is the birthstone for the month of July - it derives its name from the Latin word “ruber,” meaning “red”. It is a relative of sapphire, as they are both formed from the mineral corundum (aluminum oxide). They vary in color and clarity from a deep red, to a bright translucent, almost violet pink. With all the new goodies here, we’re having trouble pinning down a good name for our most favorite new piece so, we’re asking for your help again! We’re holding a naming contest for this necklace. Two participants will be awarded $85 Gift Certificates. One will be given to the ‘name’ entry that receives the most votes. The second will be selected at random out of everyone that voted!

As a girl, I knew there was a great big world outside the bustling interior of Hong Kong. What I didn’t come to know until leaving those walls, was that life is simply a series of collected moments, strung together with accrued strengths and reflected upon in order of relevance and value.
